TMJ DYSFUNCTION

TMJ symptoms are not easy to diagnose because symptoms, such as headaches, can be caused by a multitude of other problems. On occasion some people have symptoms similar to TMJ, for example, on a routine trip to the dentist you may have your mouth open for a long period of time, and you  might notice clicking or popping in your jaw. Similar symptoms may result from intubation during surgery, however the symptoms often diminish over time.

Skilled dentists, Medical Doctors and Chiropractors can have problems determining if a patient’s symptoms are TMJ, and if the symptoms are severe enough to need treatment. TMJ covers many specific jaw joint & muscle problems over two dozen, ranging from the effects of trauma or accidents such as whiplash, to arthritis and infections.

If you notice noises such as clicking, grinding, or crunching when you open or close your mouth you may have TMJ. These noises occur because the articular disk is fitted so the condyle head of the mandible can slide smoothly up and down, when the condyle head is not in its proper position and passes over the ridge of the disk it will cause a click or pop that can lock the jaw in either the open or closed position and usually requires a manual adjustment to dislodge it back into normal working order. The grinding or crunching noises occur when there is bone on bone contact within the joint. If the articular disk is worn through or completely out of place, your jawbone will move on its hinge, but in direct contact with the skull. If you experience noises when you move your jaw consult, Armstrong Chiropractic to help determine the severity.

A common symptom could be having a limited range of motion within the joint. If you have TMJ, every time you open and close your mouth you put wear on the tissues of the joint. This can cause severe problems if not treated properly, so it is recommended that you seek a chiropractor for treatment options.  At Armstrong Chiropractic we can help, diagnosis your issue and put you on the right track to recovery.

TMJ Treatment

Although Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) can be difficult to diagnosis, studies show about 35% of the American population has TMJ disorders.

As mentioned before TMJ disorders have a variety of causes. Misaligned or missing teeth may force the bone out of its proper position. Trauma from a crash or fall can do the same thing. Whiplash is a common cause of TMJ dysfunction. Stress can trigger grinding of the teeth or clenching of the jaw which may lead to TMJ dysfunction, and that pain can flow through your face, neck, and head causing a variety of symptoms and discomfort.

Why is Chiropractic the most commonly recommended treatment for TMJ disorders? The answer is simple; chiropractors are trained to correct ailments, by examining all aspects of your lifestyle. We will create a TMJ treatment plan that excludes surgery and medication. An intra-oral orthotic, or splint, can be fitted into the upper or lower jaw, and is designed to reposition the condylar head back into its normal position. If your TMJ is related to stress, several muscle-relieving exercises or stress-relieving therapies can be diagnosed. Some of these therapies include meditation, counseling, or massage. Treatments such as heat, ice, electric stimulation, and ultrasound may be used when needed.  The emphasis is on rehabilitation and return of motion through individually tailored program that will fit your specific need.  If you are experiencing TMJ symptoms please contact us for a complete examination and consultation.
