What is Spondylosis

Spondylosis is a degenerative disorder that results in damage to the spine and a loss of motion. It is also known as spinal osteoarthritis and it is usually age related. It can affect anywhere from the neck to the middle of the back, to the lumbar area and can result in chronic pain.

The following areas of the spine can often be affected by spondylosis:

  • Intervertebral discs - As we age, the discs in our back can dry out or deteriorate. As they dry they lose their shock absorber-like tendencies. The discs can also slip or become herniated.
  • Facet joints - These are the joints that link the vertebrae to each other. The surface of the joint is coated with cartilage that allows for movement without friction. As the joint deteriorates and cartilage is lost, bone spurs and inflammation can occur.
  • Ligaments and bones - Bone spurs from the deteriorating cartilage can restrict the flow of blood to the vertebrae. Ligaments can become weak with age.

If you believe you may be suffering from spondylosis your chiropractor may be able to help. The chiropractor will examine you and determine what the best treatment is for your particular condition. Heat and/or electrical stimulation can help to reduce the pain and eliminate spasms. They may recommend a regimen of exercise to help strengthen the supporting back and abdominal muscles. If movement is particularly painful, isometric exercises may be most beneficial initially. Gradually you may be able to reclaim your flexibility, strength, and range of motion.
