Avoid Neck Pain from your Workstation

Better than 66% of the population will experience neck pain during their lifetime.  Left unchecked, a dull pain can eventually become a much more serious malady. For those of you whose job requires long periods sitting in front of a computer, having your workstation set up properly can help avoid such pain. If you are experiencing such pain now, pay especially close attention.

Neck pain used to be mostly prevalent in the realm of the office worker. Most homes now have personal computers as well and it's no surprise that neck pain has made the transition as well. A well laid out and ergonomic workstation is now a must whether it is at home or on the job.  If you have neck pain there is likely a cause you can track down.

Neck pain can be caused by stress on the shoulders due to a monitor that is positioned too high or too low. Ideally the monitor should be adjusted so it is level with your eyes and your posture is straight. Slouching pulls your shoulders forward, forcing your neck and back muscles to try and compensate which can be a source of pain.

Improper positioning of the keyboard can cause many of the same problems as a poorly located monitor such as tension in the back and neck. The keyboard should be placed at a height that keeps your arms bent when using it. Purpose built ergonomic keyboards are also available that aid in good posture. Popular designs are curved or split.

Proper workstation ergonomics is critical, especially if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer. The more time you spend working, the more painful poor posture can be. Taking a little time to adjust your workstation can make a world of difference and keep you pain free.
